
Good morning! Early today, FIFA awarded Brazil the 2027 Women’s World Cup. It’s counting on the tournament to boost women’s soccer in Brazil and across South America. In yesterday’s SA Confidential, Mike Woitalla writes about his recent trip to Rio de Janeiro, where he saw how poorly women’s soccer is treated at a match between Flamengo and Santos, both giant clubs. The game was played on a Monday afternoon in the middle of nowhere. The soccer? “Smooth individual skill and rhythmical team play.” Sadly the match drew less than 100 fans in a stadium used mostly by a fourth division men’s team and surrounded by rubble along one side.
