Good morning! So you think it never rains in Southern California? There was one-half inch of rain reported on Wednesday in San Diego (and snow in the nearby mountains), enough to turn Snapdragon Stadium into a swamp for the USA-Canada semifinal at the W Gold Cup. It was an ugly match, but dramatic and certainly memorable. The Gold Cup on the men’s side took off in the 1990s in even wetter conditions. The 1996 final between Mexico and Brazil drew 88,000 rain-drenched fans at the LA Coliseum, and El Niño rains played havoc with the games staged in the Los Angeles area in 1998.
