Good morning! The U.S. Supreme Court won’t hear an appeal in a lawsuit filed to end U.S. Soccer’s policy of not allowing foreign teams to play official matches on American soil. U.S. Soccer and MLS have had a long history of success in antitrust lawsuits, but this case could have a different ending. The Biden administration filed a 23-page brief in support of the plaintiff, Relevent Sports, over the antitrust issue of U.S. Soccer’s role as a member association, and FIFA, the co-defendant, wants to settle. Does it mean the Real Madrid-Barcelona clásico will be played in Miami any time soon? Or the next Arsenal-Chelsea derby will be played in Los Angeles? Unlikely. But just the prospect of foreign leagues entering the lucrative U.S. market will be hugely impactful.
