Good morning! The U.S. Open Cup moves into the round of 32 today with the entry of eight MLS teams and the top eight USL Championship teams. Missing are the rest of MLS — the other 18 U.S. teams that traditionally entered the tournament. SA’s Beau Dure proposes an alternative to the modifications of this year’s tournament. To alleviate fixture congestion, he suggests cutting back on the size of the three other cups involving MLS teams — Concacaf Champions Cup, Leagues Cup and MLS Cup playoffs — incentivizing them other ways and and balancing the drama. Beau, our resident Duke hoops supporter, has come up with a 64-team tournament — with all games laid out on a bracket in advance — and even simulated a draw for soccer’s version of March Madness.
