London is calling for one of the NWSL’s brightest American stars. A report linking Chelsea’s interest in Alyssa Thompson seemingly emerged on August 28.
The likelihood of Thompson’s transfer gained further traction on Monday, thanks to reporting about both the “advanced talks” between all parties, as well as her excused absence from Monday night’s match vs. Bay FC. Chelsea aims to ink the 20-year-old before the FA Women’s Super League transfer window closes on Sept. 4.
The prospective move makes a world of sense for Chelsea, which has reportedly had “longstanding interest” in Thompson. Reports indicate Chelsea have also scouted Alyssa’s 19-year-old sister outside back Gisele Thompson.
Chelsea has a stranglehold on English club women’s soccer, having won six consecutive league titles, and completing a rare domestic treble last season. They will hope Thompson provides the missing piece to the one trophy that has eluded the West London club: the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
However, what could this all mean for Thompson and for the NWSL at large? Thompson is virtually synonymous with Angel City FC.
