SheBelieves Cup: France has inside track

The USA enters the final game of the SheBelieves Cup on Tuesday against France at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. needing a win to have a chance of capturing the tournament title for the second year in a row. A 1-0 loss to England on Saturday dropped the USA into a tie for  second place behind France, which beat England, 2-1, and tied Germany, 0-0.

A year ago, France finished last at the SheBelieves Cup without scoring a goal. The Bleues will clinch the title if they beat the USA. They can win the title with a tie though that depends on the result of Tuesday's first game between England and Germany.

The USA and France will enter the game knowing that they need to do to win. If England beats Germany, the USA must beat France and then hope it edges the English on the tiebreaker.

France stunned England, 2-1, getting goals from Marie-Laure Delie in the 80th minute and Wendie Renard in the sixth minute of stoppage time to rally from a 1-0 deficit.

Olivier Echouafni took over as France's head coach last fall. He continues to rely on a nucleus of players from European champion Lyon (nine players), which American Alex Morgan joined in January.

But Echouafni, who knew little about women's soccer when he took the job, has added young stars Grace Geyoro (PSG) and Sakina Karchaoui (Montpellier) from the 2016 French Under-20 World Cup runner-up team as the Bleues prepare for Euro 2017 in the Netherlands and the 2019 Women's World Cup they will host.

Ouch. 3-0. Can't say this wasn't coming. How is that the US is supposed to be an underdog in this tournament on home soil? Defending World Cup champions....
