Wataru Endo  scored two minutes into stoppage time for a 2-1 win over FC Köln that ensured VfB Stuttgart's top-tier survival. Matarazzo guided VfB Stuttgart to promotion from the second division after taking the helm midway through the 2019-20 season.

Early in the 2020-21 season, he became the first head coach born and raised in the United States to win a game in the Bundesliga.

VfB Stuttgart's dramatic win to maintain top tier status makes that the American coach the third longest-serving Bundesliga coach.
