“A great player with a bright future,” is how Thierry Henry described Tim Ream in 2010 amid the 22-year-old’s MLS Rookie of the Year season.
In 2025, Tim Ream leads the USMNT with 945 minutes played, while captaining 10 games. He celebrated his 38th birthday on Sunday.
Since playing with Henry, Ream played more than 400 games in England before returning to MLS, with Charlotte FC in 2024. He has 74 caps with USA, but it’s been in recent years that he’s become its invaluable central defender. He had to cancel a family vacation when he was unexpectedly named to the 2022 World Cup, then played every minute.
Ream’s rookie season play hinted he was primed for a long career, because he thrived on technique and tactical awareness over physicality. We asked him what advice he’d give to young players hoping for such longevity. A summary of his answer:
