Sidelined for the last three years by injury, Tobin Heath announced her retirement on Thursday at age 37.
Heath scored 36 goals and had 42 assists in 181 appearances during a U.S. national career (2008-2021) that included two World Cup titles and two Olympic gold medals. Even among American women’s soccer’s pantheon, Heath stood out for her artistry on the ball, which made her a fan favorite and led to titles for country, club and college.

Heath’s retirement announcement coincided with audio company Audacy’s acquisition of “The RE-CAP Show,” the weekly video podcast Heath hosts with her partner and former teammate Christen Press. “I never played to be famous or for people to care about me,” Heath said on Thursday’s show. “I just played because I loved it.”

New Jersey-bred: At age 10, Heath started decorating her Basking Ridge, N.J., bedroom with posters of stars Arsenal stars such as Thierry Henry and watched highlights on a VCR. She played youth ball for New Jersey’s PDA, where club founder Tom Anderson encouraged kids to do “every trick they see from Messi, Ronaldo or any other.”
