Tony Meola started in goal for the USA when in 1989 it qualified for the World Cup for first time in 40 years — and started every game for the USA at the 1990 and 1994 WorldCups, captaining the team at the latter tournament. His pro career of nearly two decades included Kansas City’s 2000 championship season when he set the MLS season shutout record (17) that stillstands. He was a reserve keeper on the 2002 World Cup team. Meola, who served as a Fox color commentator during the 2018 World Cup and co-hosts the SiriusXM radio show “Counter Attack,”has served as assistant coach for various U.S. youth national teams over the last five years.
