About seven hours after Coach Emma Hayes announced the return of Trinity Rodman to the USWNT, Rodman ended her Washington Spirit game on crutches.

Rodman, because of a lingering back injury, had played only one U.S. game — scoring in a 60-minute appearance vs. Brazil last April — since helping the USA win gold at the 2024 Olympics. The 23-year-old’s inclusion headlined Hayes’ roster announcement for October friendlies against Portugal (Oct. 23 & 26 ) and New Zealand (Oct. 29).

But in the 37th minute of her Washington Spirit’s 4-0 win over Monterrey in the Concacaf W Champions Cup, Rodman stayed down after attempting a tackle and was in tears while helped off the field. Rodman, whose right knee was taped when she used crutches heading to the locker room at halftime, is scheduled for scans on Thursday.
