For coaches of the 2023 U-20 World Cup teams, putting together rosters has been a nightmare. Any other year, a late May into June timeline would be ideal. But the winter Qatar World Cup forced leagues to adjust and many leagues that would be done by early May are now ending in June. Since clubs have never been required to release players for youth events, U-20 coaches have been scrambling to field rosters as many clubs have refused to release players.
One significant example came this week when it was reported that French U-20 manager Landry Chauvin was denied the release of 28 players for the U-20 World Cup. And it wasn’t just star Ligue 1 players getting denied releases either. It was also revealed that Yoan Kore was not allowed to go because his club, Ligue 2’s Paris FC, wanted him for the reserve team’s relegation flight.
