USA-AUSTRALIA EXPRESS:
Oct. 14 in Commerce City, Colorado
USA 2 Australia 1. Goals: Wright 33, 51; Bos 19.
Att.: 18,218.
The USA rounded out its October camp with a 2-1 win over Australia, thanks to a pair of goals from standout striker Haji Wright. Coach Mauricio Pochettino again rolled out the 3-4-3 shape, but this time it was a true back three in and out of possession, with Tim Weah shifted across the field to play as a left wingback. Recovering from an early goal conceded, the USMNT bounced back well for another positive result and some encouraging momentum for the first time in a while.

GOALKEEPER
It wasn’t the busiest of nights for Matt Freese. The NYCFC man was unable to do anything to prevent the opener, but was otherwise solid when called on. He made a big save in second-half stoppage time, and had a few moments of composure on the ball to play through the Socceroos’ press.

DEFENDERS
None of the defenders covered themselves in glory on Australia’s opener (0-1). Mark McKenzie in particular was completely flat-footed, unable to do anything but watch as the ball bounced a yard in front of him before Jordan Bos smacked it in. He was better afterward, tidy on the ball, but it was a concerning lapse
Chris Richards was the best of the lot, but wasn’t blameless for the goal, stabbing at the ball and missing. He had a couple key interventions afterwards, though, and had a key tackle that led to the USA’s first goal (1-1). Most importantly, after taking the armband from Christian Pulisic, he showed a refreshing willingness to stand up for his teammates and not back down. He’s certainly captain material.
Miles Robinson was fine. He kept the ball well, and while he wasn’t heavily tested throughout the match, he stood up well under pressure when the attack did tilt towards his side. He’s reliable, if unspectacular, at this level.
