Out of Houston’s 2.3 million residents, perhaps nobody has contributed to the city’s soccer scene as much as Glenn Davis

Born and raised in New Jersey, Davis started his professional career with the Pennsylvania Stoners before joining the Houston Dynamos in 1984. He’s remained in the Space City ever since, blazing the trail in youth coaching before making the transition to broadcasting in 1994. Davis hasn’t looked back ever since, working as Houston Dynamo’s play-by-play commentator, announcing major competitions like the UEFA Champions League and Summer Olympics, and hosting the radio show Soccer Matters on ESPN 97.5 FM.

And for the first time ever, he’ll have the chance to watch a FIFA World Cup up close in person at home (having previously broadcast the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada), with Houston set to host seven matches in the upcoming World Cup. Soccer America caught up with Davis about a number of topics, including:

SA: What’s one thing that outsiders should know about soccer and its fans in Houston?

GLENN DAVIS: Houston’s soccer fans come from all over the world. It’s a bit cliché, but we’re one of the most diverse cities in America, so you’ve got all these pockets of just highly passionate people. Of course, everybody leans directly to the Mexican soccer fan, but we’ve got a Nigerian community, we’ve got a huge Asian community, we have a Central American community, we have a South American community. You’re going to find fans from every pocket and corner of the earth in Houston that absolutely love the game.
