Soccer West launched April 8, 1971. The first issue (available at the LA84 Foundation Digital Library) was eight pages and cost 25 cents. The publication, based in Berkeley, California, began as a biweekly, publishing every other Thursday, but by late September 1971 its frequency changed to weekly and the next year Soccer West was renamed Soccer America.
