Until he retired from Goldman Sachs, Carlos Cordeiro had no connection to soccer. But following his appointment to U.S. Soccer’s board of directors as its first independent director in2007, he took it upon himself to learn all aspects of the federation and soccer landscape. That knowledge and those contacts he made served him well when he made the surprise decision to run for U.S.Soccer president, which he won on Saturday.
