The original NASL — the league that brought Pele, Franz Beckenbauer and Johan Cruyff to America — lasted from 1968 to 1984. Of the 17 NASLchampions, only one was led by a USA-born coach — Al Miller, who guided the Philadelphia Atoms to the 1973 title. Miller’s team was also unique in that it was comprised largelyof American-based players, including goalkeeper Bob Rigby, the first American soccer player to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
