If the USA is to beat Algeria when they meet June 23 at the World Cup, it will have to get past defender Madjid Bougherra, one of the most sought-afterdefenders in the world.

Spanish champion Barcelona and Sevilla are reportedly eyeing the 27-year-old Algerian international who has flourished at Scottish club Rangers and had anexcellent Africa Cup of Nations. Speculation about Bougherra’s transfer is high, given Rangers’ shaky financial situation.

“We had speculation about Madjid all last year as well and itlooks as if we’ll have it this year as well,” Rangers manager Walter Smith said. “Our team is getting better and that brings a wee bit of speculation, but thathas surrounded Madjid for long enough and will probably continue to surround him.”
