East Timor, dubbed the “Little Samba Nation” for its use of naturalized Brazilians on its national team, has been expelled from the 2023 Asian Cup and ordered to forfeit 29 matches by the AsianFootball Confederation after an investigation determined that he Football Federation Timor-Leste, had falsified birth and baptism certificates to register at least a dozen Brazilians for the EastTimor national team. The documents needed to show of their one or both of their parents were born in East Timor, a requirement to get around FIFA’s five-year waiting period for foreign-born players.
