Jozy Altidore‘s disappointing first season at Sunderlandhit a new low, however, as he was left off the Black Cats’ matchday squad for the Capital One Cup final at Wembley against Manchester City.

Altidore, who could only watch as the BlackCats fell, 3-1, after a strong first half, had played in all six games leading up to the final, and has dressed for all but one of Sunderland’s 26 Premier League games. His exclusion by Sunderlandcoach Gus Poyet was not entireally a surprise, however, as he had been subbed at the half of Sunderland’s 4-1 loss at Arsenal a week earlier.

Saturday …

Of the seven European-based field players eligible for Wednesday’s Ukraine-USAgame, all but Brek Shea started on Saturday. That included Clint Dempsey, who made his first appearance for last-placeEnglish Premier League club Fulham in more than three weeks and started in its 3-1 loss at home to London rival Chelsea, which has opened up a four-lead at the top. Dempsey missed a golden opportunitywith a header in the third minute in his last game before returning to the Seattle Sounders.

Gabriel Farfan, who is on loan from Chivas USA,made his Mexican league debut as a second-half sub for Chiapas in its 3-0 loss to Leon.
