Sepp Blatter has once again reiterated that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will go ahead as planned, despite the emergence of a new report claiming that both 2018 host Russia and Qatarwere engaged in vote-trading and vote-buying. “Believe me, with all what has been said, what is told around the world, by whom? By those … not involved exactly [with] what has happened or whathappens in football,” the FIFA President said at the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) 60th anniversary celebration on Sunday. “The World Cup 2022 will be played in Qatar.”
Earlier in theday, a dossier compiled by the Sunday Times for the UK’s Culture, Media and Sport select committee accused both hosts of bribery and favor-seeking with unnamed members of FIFA’s executivecommittee, which voted on the awarding of the World Cup hosting rights for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments in 2010. The report also accused England’s 2018 bid team of trying to engineer avote-swap with their colleagues in South Korea, which was bidding for the 2022 tournament.
Last week, the Swiss attorney general received a criminal complaint from FIFA against possiblelaw-breaking by unnamed individuals mentioned in American attorney Michael Garcia‘s investigation into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding process; the British Government is alsoconsidering launching a criminal investigation.
