[MLS] None of the six MLS games played on Saturday ended in ties and only one produced just one goal. Houston’s LovelPalmer scored with an incredible strike from 35 yards in Houston’s 3-0 flattening of Chivas USA, and Quakes rookie defender Ike Opara got hissecond goal in a 2-0 defeat of New England, yet these performances merit Saturday’s Three Stars …

Week 4-Saturday’s Three Stars:

1.  Edson Buddle (Los Angeles).

Buddle upped his league-leading goalscoring total to seven and the Galaxy ran its record to 4-0 Saturday by beatingReal Salt Lake, 2-1, in an MLS Cup 2009 rematch at Home Depot Center. Buddle jumped at the far post to powerfully head Landon Donovan’s corner kick intothe net for the first goal, and added the winner in the 76th minute by neatly controlling a pass from Juninho with his left foot and drilling a first-time,half-volley low into the net. With seven goals, Buddle is nearly halfway to his career high of 15 goals scored in 2008.

2. Brian McBride (Chicago).
The three-time World Cup veteran came off the bench to notch a goal and an assist as the Fire got its first win by sending D.C. United down to its fourth straightdefeat, 2-0. He redirected a Patrick Nyarko pass for Marco Pappa to break open a scoreless game in the 80th minute, andclinched victory nine minutes later by outmuscling Carey Talley to head a long kick from goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra intothe net.

3. Jhon Kennedy Hurtado (Seattle).

The rugged Sounders defender provided a couple of highlight moments when he thwarted Ryan Smith as the dangerous Wizards winger drove into the penalty area, and raced back to clear a bad back pass by PeterVagenas. Yet he also denied Smith throughout the match, even ranging out from a central position to win tackles and challenges near the touchline when he and partner Tyrone Marshall weren’t battling forward Kei Kamara. The match stayed goalless into stoppage time until substitute Michael Fucito scored the first goal Kansas City has conceded this season for a 1-0 victory.

  1. I’m very glad that Landon Donovan showed the courage to say what needs to be said… in a time when we have so few strikers on form and scoring, both Edson Buddle and Hercules Gomez need to be seriously considered for a call up to the National team… face it, if Dempsey or Charlie Davies are at all questionable, and Ching’s hamstring is again a problem like it was last summer… we will NEED strikers that are on form, and while I’m mindful of Hull City’s reasons for playing very conservatively, what with relegation facing them as a very real probability… Jozy just isn’t scoring much, so we will need some other options and the FIFA preliminary roster is due in three weeks or so… and Buddle’s name really should be on it.We just can’t expect all our scoring to come on corner kicks… look, it’s been Bocanegra, Goodson, Bornstein moving into the attack not our attackers that have done the majority of our, admittedly anemic scoring… this just can’t continue or we will be in some very real trouble come this June.
