[HOMEGROWN WATCH] Chivas USA signed Caleb Calvert, the leading scorer in the 2013-14 Development Academy’s under-15/16 agegroup, making the 16-year-old forward the youngest player to sign as a homegrown player with the MLS club.
Calvert, whose is known to his teammates as “Rooney,” led the nation with 22goals. He has been a part of Chivas USA’s Youth Academy for over two years. He joined the Chivas USA reserve team for its Reserve League against the Seattle Sounders and scored in the 2-1win.
Marco Delgado, who is now starting for the Goats, was two months older when he signed with Chivas USA last year.
”Caleb Calvert is a very talented player whose development in the Academy we’ve been following for a long time,” said Chivas USA director of soccer Francisco Palencia. “He’s a player with very good movement in the entire field and a great finisher inside the box. I believe he has in him all the requirements we needin a forward at Chivas USA.”

Ric, Minimum is $40,000 isnt it ?? Still not nearly enough for a player like this that surely could have managed maybe even more in a college scholarship, I would think. I wonder whats the catch?? Especially when historically, young players dont really see playing time until 3 years in.
The catch is that Chivas USA will trade him away in less than two seasons. If they are still around two more seasons… I know, I know… Garber says Chivas USA is not going anywhere…
I get why Chivae does it but how do they convince these kids to sign and give up college eligibility? Just a promise? Do they offer to pay for their college in case something goes wrong?
