The Washington Post’s long-time soccer reporter, Steven Goff, argues that Sunil Gulati, president of U.S. Soccer since 2006, should step down at the end of his current term, in 2018, andnot accept a fourth term, as he would likely be able to do even if proposed U.S. Soccer rule changes would allow him to stay in charge through 2022.
Goff writes, “Klinsmann’sfailure was Gulati’s failure,” but adds that though Jurgen Klinsmann was very much Gulati’s choice, Gulati should not resign in the aftermath of Klinsmann’s firing. But Goff adds, “Heneeds to accept that, for the betterment of the federation and the sport, he should stand down and welcome a successor in 2018. A dozen years is plenty.”
