The New York Cosmos have made a lot of noise with the signing of Eric Cantona and Cobi Jones to front-officepositions, but that doesn’t mean they’ll necessarily land an MLS expansion franchise.

In a conference call Tuesday, MLS Commissioner Don Garbersaid the Cosmos group — which includes Terry Byrne, a friend of Los Angeles Galaxy star David Beckham — was only one of several groupsworking on acquiring a New York team.

“We’re in discussions with the Cosmos but also with other ownership groups,” Garber said. “While I have lots of respect and admiration for the guysthat have relaunched that great brand and have done a good job from a marketing perspective, and they’ve made certainly a lot of noise, we’ve got to continue to ensure that any group we speak toseriously about MLS expansion needs to have the financial capabilities, long-term vision, the capability to get a stadium built and developed.”
