[WORLD CUP: Off the Post] Gary Lewin, the man charged with keeping England’s players fit, has been sidelined for the rest of the World Cup afterdislocating his ankle while celebrating England’s goal in the 2-1 loss to Italy.

The 50-year-old Lewin jumped off the bench, after Daniel Sturridge scored a 37th minutemomentary equalizer, and had a bad fall. The game was delayed for a few minutes until Lewin was stretchered off.

“That’s a very sad moment for us,” said England coach RoyHodgson. “In celebrating the goal he jumped up and landed on a water bottle and dislocated his ankle. Very, very painful. He’s been taken to hospital. I think the doctor was able to set it inand put it back at the side of the field. It’s the end of the World Cup I’m afraid for Gary Lewin. A very sad moment for him and the team.”

Lewin is being replaced by Steve Kemp, who hadbeen assisting Lewin.

Lewin is famous for life-saving treatment on John Terry after he swallowed his tongue in a 2007 clash with Abou Diaby in an EnglishPremier League game.

  1. This is a bit ironic for a trainer! Anyway, what about using crutches? He should still be able to get about and take care of the team no matter what! I used to be a college trainer and worked a lot while being injured!
