England coach Fabio Capello reacted more like an Englishman than an Italian after his team’s 1-1 tie with the USA. He had a stiff upper lip with acontinental twist in saying he wasn’t worried. He also insisted he didn’t make any mistakes in his team selections. “Absolutely not,” he said.
But that belied the moves he made. Capellostarted James Milner when the Aston Villa midfielder was coming off a stomach bug. Milner couldn’t handle SteveCherundolo and had to be replaced in the first half. Center back Ledley King had trouble with Jozy Altidore andhad to come off at halftime with a groin injury.
Perhaps Capello’s biggest mistake concerned his choice of Robert Green — not because of theblunder the West Ham keeper made but because the Italian showed utter lack in confidence in all three of his goalies by leaving it to the last possible minute — an hour and 45 minutes before kickoff– to name his starter.
