The English Premier League is considering the introduction of a playoff system top decide the fourth qualifier for the UEFA Champions League. As it is now, the top four teams advance to the UEFAChampions League. Under the proposal, the teams that finish fourth to seventh would meet in a playoff.
The proposal was is believed to have the backing of all clubs – except theso-called big four of Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool, who dominate the EPL.
In the Netherlands, a similar playoff system was adopted to determine the the secondChampions League qualification place from the Eredevisie, but it was dropped after the 2007-08 season.
