1. Alex Mendez (Ajax) and Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund) are among seven Americans named to the rosters of the 32 teams competing in theUEFA Champions League group stage, which begins Sept. 17. The others are Mendez’s Ajax teammate, Sergino Dest, plus Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig), Christian Pulisic (Chelsea), Tim Weah (Lille) and EthanHorvath (Club Brugge). Dest, Adams, Pulisic and Weah — if they are healthy — have the best chance of playing.
2. The USA beat aZagreb selection, 2-1, in the first game of the new U-20 men’s cycle. Cole Bassett (Colorado Rapids) and Cameron Harper (Celtic) scored in the match played in Rogaska Slatina, Slovenia. On Monday,the U.S. U-20s face the United Arab Emirates U-23s.
