[NORTH CAROLINA-SOUTH CAROLINA: Women] For the first time, South Carolina is headed to the NCAA Division I women’s quarterfinals. It took the Gamecocks’ thirdshutout in three games to defeat No. 2 regional seed North Carolina, 1-0, in Chapel Hill. Freshman Abbey Crider, who stepped in for injured Canadian star Sabrina D’Angelo in goal on Friday night, made three saves to post a pair of shutouts in her first two starts.

Junior Raina Johnson’s goal in the 23rd minute was the first for the Gamecocks in the NCAA Tournament. They had advanced on penalty kicks in the previous two contests.

In the23rd minute, South Carolina scored for the first time of this year’s NCAA Tournament and for the first time in 366 minutes of play when Johnson’s shot from 20 yards out hit the right post.UNC keeper Bryane Haeberlin appeared to have the ball, but it dribbled past her and into the goal.

The Gamecocks had not scored dating back to a2-1 SEC quarterfinal win over Missouri.

North Carolina, winner of 21 of the first 32 NCAA championships, now has for only the second time in its history just one national title in thelast five years, but Coach Anson Dorrance will have 10 starters back as well as two-year defensive starter HannaGardner, who medically red-shirted in 2014.
