A native of Venezuela, Portland Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese came to the United States to play at Long Island University and started a 20-year pro career in 1994 with the Long Island RoughRiders of the United States Interregional Soccer League. He was an original member of the MetroStars and in addition to playing for New England and San Jose in MLS spent time with clubs in Italy andEngland as well as his home country, for which he played 30 times and scored 10 goals from 1998 to 2001.
