[AMERICANS ABROAD] Released by Aston Villa in May, Brad Guzan is set to return to the English Premier League club, according to its new manager, Paul Lambert.

Guzan made only eight league appearances in four seasons, playing behind first Brad Friedel and then Shay Given, but Lambert seems set to give Guzan a shot at winning the job from Given, the Irish nationalteam keeper.

“It’s near,” Lambert told the Birmingham Mail. “I’ve watched Brad and some of his games when he was in the team last year and he was excellent. I knowhe’s always had that stigma of being the No. 2 behind some really good goalkeepers here. But when you come back at the start of the season, nobody knows what’s going to happen and it depends onwhoever does well. Brad played very well the time he was in and maybe he found himself a bit unlucky to be back out.”

  1. Wow. Hope this works out for him. He’s a good keeper and AVFC didn’t give him a proper shot at the top last time around. I have no doubt he can overtake Given and I’m sure he can help AV move up the table.

  2. He should not accept unless Manager Paul Lambert specifically both verbally and in writing tells Mr. Guzan that the GK team #1 position is open for a fair and honest duel with Given. Guzan is good enough to expect and DESERVE this integrity from any club manager. Guzan should also inquire as to who is the third team GK and if any other signings for GK are planned. A 19 or 21 year old GK cannot really hold these kinds of very candid discussions. Brad Guzan is already a proven keeper and he’s the USA’s number 2. He’s also already faithfully served at Aston Villa and deserves all honesty and fairness in a fair shot at being the team guy with the #1 shirt.
