[CONNECTICUT] Before he went on to play for MLS’s FC Dallas, the late Bobby Rhine starred at the University ofConnecticut, where he was a two-time All-America selection and top scholar. Huskies coach Ray Reid remembers Rhine, who died of a heart attack Monday at the ageof 35 …
Rhine finished his career as UConn’s seventh all-time leading scorer with 42 goals and 20 assists for 104 points. Rhine was just one of eight players in programhistory to reach the 100-point plateau. He was selected as an Outstanding Scholar Athlete by the UConn Athletic Club in 1999.
“He was a fantastic player and an even greaterperson,” said Reid. “I had a great relationship with him. He was a terrific man. His smile was just magnetic to anyone around him. He will surely be missed.
“I was fortunateenough to have met him and coached him when I first started at UConn in 1997. He was a senior when I came in and decided to redshirt and complete his last season as a graduate student in 1998working on his master’s degree. He was the centerpiece of our 1998 team that reached the NCAA Tournament.”
