[AROUND THE NET] Legendary high school coach Rick Jacobs, who coached players such as U.S. national team stars Claudio Reyna and Gregg Berhalter, resigned after 25 years the head coach at St. Benedict’s in Newark, N.J., to take anon-coaching position in Major League Soccer.

“It is a unique opportunity that will keep me involved in the game,’’ Jacobs told the Newark Star-Ledger. “There’s abusiness part of it that intrigues me, and I was in the world of business prior to my coming to Benedict’s. I’m at an age where I can marry some of my business skills with my soccerbackground.’’

Under Jacobs, St. Benedict’s had a 519-27-13 record and won 23 state Prep A crowns. It had a 131-game winning streak, one short of the national preprecord.

Jim Wandling will replace Jacobs as head coach.
