[BOSTON COLLEGE-STANFORD] Top-ranked Stanford came out firing, but it was up against an inspired keeper in sophomore JillianMastroianni, and the Soccer America Preseason All-American helped No. 6 Boston College hold off the Cardinal, 1-1, Friday night before a sold out crowd at Newton Soccer Field.
Lindsay Taylor for Stanford on a perfectly placed shot midway up the far post for a 1-0 Stanford lead in the 56th minute, but Boston College struck back quicklyon senior Natalie Crutchfield‘s tying goal off a perfect through ball from sophomore Kristie Mewis eight minuteslater.
Mastroianni made 10 saves, none bigger than when she smothered a diving header from Mariah Nogueira with two minutes left in the secondovertime. And with just 24 seconds to play, Morgan Redman‘s header was tipped over the crossbar by Mastroianni.
In the first half, Mastroianni madea one-handed deflection at the start of the game off of a shot from Taylor and later in the half a brilliant stop on a Christine Press shot from just five yardsout.
“We definitely dominated the game,” Stanford coach Paul Ratcliffe said. “It was not a bad result by any stretch. Boston College is a top-10 team. But, by the same token, we weredisappointed we didn’t win that game.”
