Steve McClaren became the first English coach to win a major European league title since 1996 when he led FC Twente to the Dutch Eredivisie championship onSunday.

Costa Rican Bryan Ruiz and Slovakian Miroslav Stoch scored to give Twente a 2-0 win over NAC thatclinched the title with a one-point edge over Ajax. The title was the first for Twente, formed in 1965 following the merger between two city teams, one of which had picked up an Eredivisie title 39years earlier.

“Fantastic. We deserve it,” said McClaren, the former England national team coach. “Ajax have been coming but we kept winning. It’s unbelievable. We got better and betterafter finishing second last season.” The last English coach to win a major league title was the late Bobby Robson with Portugal’s FC Porto in 1996.
