After his brace against Spartak Moscow on Tuesday, Barcelona striker Lionel Messi has now reached former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker Ruud VanNistelrooy’s record of 56 in the UEFA Champions League. At the age of just 25 he is already the second top goal scorer in the competition’s history, behind Real legendRaul who has 71.

The Argentine, who seems to be on pace to break just about every conceivable scoring record, is also now just five goals away from GerdMüller who holds the record for the highest number of goals in a year with 85. Given that he averages more than one goal per game, Messi should beat Muller’s record, as he has ninegames left in all competitions to score five more goals.
