The 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs are in full swing. That means that for a large portion of the league, the offseason is already in full swing.
With 16 teams left in the playoffs, 14 teams have already turned their full focus to getting prepared for the 2026 season, and there’s a lot of work to do. Eight clubs made coaching changes during the 2025 season, and seven of those have yet to name a new permanent boss. With roster overhaul inevitable for a lot of these teams, it’s going to be a busy winter.
Here at Soccer America, we’re taking a look at the five teams with the most work to do to be ready for opening day.
5. Toronto FC
Toronto FC took a major step toward rebuilding this summer, buying out the lucrative contracts of Llorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi. After the season, nine more players had their options declined or saw their contracts expire. For a team that finished in 12th place in the Eastern Conference and has been one of the more disappointing clubs in MLS over the last several years, missing the playoffs every season since 2020.
TFC did make one major incoming move in the summer, trading for U.S. international Djordje Mihailovic from the Colorado Rapids to be the new center piece of the team. He looked excellent in his 10 matches with the Reds, scoring four goals and adding two assists. It’s his team now, and the rest of the roster will be built around him. If goalkeeper Sean Johnson re-signs (they’re in negotiations over a new deal), Toronto will bring back one of the best shot-stoppers in MLS.
The rest of the roster, though, needs a ton of work to be ready and competitive in 2026. With questions at every spot on the back line and little depth in midfield, combined with their willingness to spend, expect Toronto to be one of the busiest teams in the winter window.
