History is starting to drift away from Miami

Miami has had a comfortable lead in the Supporters’ Shield race for a while now, but it’s still been fighting for history. The record for points in a single MLS regular season is 73, set by the New England Revolution in 2021. And Miami looked on-pace to break that record at the start of last week. Now, after draws away to Atlanta midweek and NYCFC on Saturday, Miami is looking up at an arduous task. 

The Herons currently sit at 64 points with four games left to play. Do some quick math and you’ll realize they cannot afford to lose any of their remaining games and three of the four results have to be wins to break the Revs’ mark. Luckily, three of their remaining four matches are winnable—they play Charlotte and New England at home and Toronto away. Unluckily, this recent draw in the Bronx means they’ll have to pick up a point away to Columbus on Oct. 2 if they want a chance to break the points record.
