[OLYMPIC SPOTLIGHT] Spain is out of the men’s Olympic competition after its second straight 1-0 loss. Roger Espinoza andAndy Najar teamed to feed fellow MLS player Jerry Bengtson for the sixth minute goal that held up for the Catrachos therest of the game.

“We played so well to beat Spain,” said Bengtson, who beat Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea to score on Espinoza’scross. “It’s very nice that we heard the crowd supporting us and shouting ‘Honduras! Honduras!”

The other hero was Jose Mendoza, who turned in amasterful effort in goal. He also had some luck as Atletico Madrid star Adrian hit the crossbar, Iker Muniain hit thepost, and finally Rodrigo the bar with eight minutes to go.

In a tense match featuring 13 yellow cards, the Spaniards, who featured three Euro 2012champions, surrounded referee Juan Soto Arevalo after the Venezuelan denied them a late penalty for what they thought was a foul on Atletico Madrid starAdrian.

“All that was lacking today was the goal,” said Spain coach Luis Milla. “I don’t want to say too much, but we feel there should have been apenalty.”

  1. Concacaf looking good in these Olympics. Mexico is starting to play to expectaions. Mexico would have 6 points now if it had Pulido .

  2. Luis – could not agree more. Why did they not pick Pulido? He looked great in qualifying. I always support CONCACAF even if USA is not in.

  3. I can’t help but think politics. Not only was Pulido a presence and excellent striker with both feet, he also seemed to have great chemistry with Fabian and they both worked great of each other. I am not seeing this in the last 2 games. Pulido hasn’t been getting playing time in Tigres but neither has Dos Santos in Tottenham.
