Monterrey, which beat Real Salt Lake to win the 2011 Concacaf Champions League, has regained its form in the Mexican league, where it downed UNAM, 3-1, in the first leg of the Torneo Clausuraquarterfinals.
Osvaldo Martinez, Ecuadoran Walter Ayovi and Chilean Humberto Suazo scored for Monterrey, which needed to beat Guadalajara on the final day of the regular season just to qualify for the playoffs. Monterrey, the defending champion, and UNAMplay the second leg on Sunday.
