[MLS] Jaime Moreno, MLS’s all-time leading goal scorer, scored two more goals to give him all five goals in threevictories and lead D.C. United to a 2-0 win over host Charleston Battery that gave it the Carolina Challenge Cup championship for the first time in five appearances on Saturday night before a crowd of5,036.
The Carolina Challenge Cup has been a fixture on the MLS preseason schedule for the last seven seasons. Five of the previous champions won MLS Cup or the Supporter’s Shield.
“I hope history repeats itself,” D.C. United coach Curt Onalfo toldthe Charleston Post & Courier. “We’re a young team, so we’re just hoping to improve each time out, but this was a good way to finish off a long preseason with three straight wins.”
D.C. United started two teenagers, academy products Bill Hamid (19) in goal and Andy Najar (17) at right back, and threefirst newcomers, 37-year-old Bolivian defender Juan Manuel Pena, a trialist, Salvadoran international Cristian Castilloand Kurt Morsink, picked up after being waived by Kansas City.
Costa Rican signing Alvaro Saborio scored inthe 56th minute to lead Real Salt Lake past Toronto FC, 1-0, in the first game.
