Jose Mourinho, who previously refused to discuss former Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, on Saturday said the club’s decision to let the 36-year-old go at the end of last seasonhas already been vindicated, despite the fact that the on-loan Manchester City midfielder has scored six goals for the Premier League champ so far this campaign, including the only goal inSaturday’s 1-0 win against Leicester City.
Speaking after the Blues’ 2-0 win against Hull City, the Portuguese said, “We made the right decision,” adding, “Whenyou want to look forward, to look for the future and have people like Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic — they are the next 10 years of the club. The project is prepare for the next 10years, not for the next year.”
Indeed, the signings of Matic last January and Fabregas over the summer have been unqualified successes. While Fabregas has three goals and 14 assists inall competitions so far this season, Matic is considered by many to be Premier League leader’s best player. Both play in Lampard’s preferred position of central midfield.
Thatbeing said, Lampard has also been a success for City — in fact, reports last week claimed the former England international is set to extend his loan deal from MLS club New York City FC until the endof March. His current loan deal expires at the end of 2014.
