First they signed Freddy Adu, Now, the Tampa Bay Rowdies have signed Omar Salgado, giving them two former No. 1 picks inMLS’s SuperDraft. The Rowdies added Salgado, 21, on loan from Mexico’s Tigres for the remainder of the 2015 NASL season. The connection again is Rowdies coach Thomas Rongen, who coached Adu on the U.S. U-20s and brought Salgado into the U-20 program at the age of 17.

Born in Texas, Salgado played in the Chivas de Guadalajara youthsystem in Mexico as well as for Mexican youth national teams before Rongen invited him to join the U.S. under-20 team in 2011. Salgado has made 19 appearances with the U.S. U-18s, U-20s and U-23s,while also adding nine caps with the Mexico U-17s and U-20s.

Salgado was drafted No. 1 overall by the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. Fellow Rowdies Corey Hertzog and Rich Balchan were also selected in the first round of that draft. Salgado’s years with the ‘Caps were marredby foot  injuries.

— Midfielder Dylan Mares, who leads Indy Eleven with three goals and four assists in 2015, will miss 4-6 weeks of actionafter undergoing surgery to repair a tear in the meniscus in his right knee. He was coming off a week where he scored Indy Eleven’s lone goal in its 1-1 draw with New York.  That tally wasvoted the NASL’s Play of the Week honor and helped land the Zionsville High School graduate a spot on the league’s Team of the Week for the second time in 2015.
