Wake Forest is headed to the Men’s College Cup for the sixth time after holding off UC Santa Barbara, 1-0, before 2,207 fans at Spry Stadium on Saturday night.

Canadian AlistairJohnston scored the game’s only goal in the 44th minute after dribbling through four defenders and beating UCSB keeper Ben Roach to the near post.

Wake keeperAndrew Pannenbergstopped four shots to earn his ninth shutout of the season.

“The bottom line is that we needed to survive,” Wake coach BobbyMuuss said. “We talked all week about fighting to play football, fighting to play soccer, fighting to play our game. I think the guys did that for some periods of time. I don’t think anyone wasreally overly excited about the performance, but we said it’s a results-oriented business at this point.”

Next up: The DemonDeacons will take on top-seeded Virginia in the semifinals on Friday.
