[CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE] It’s happened before and Tuesday night it has happened again: a valiant performance by an MLS team in Mexico merits respectyet doesn’t earn points. A bizarrely disallowed goal added another dose of Mexican misfortune to this match.

The Columbus Crew held out against Santos Laguna until the third minuteof stoppage time, but couldn’t stop Ivan Estrada from drilling a low shot past keeper Andy Gruenebaum thatprovided Santos with a 1-0 victory in the second Concacaf Champions League game for both teams in Group B.

Santos (2-0-0) takes over first place in the group; the Crew (1-1-0) is insecond and will stay there no matter what the outcome when pointless Municipal and Joe Public play on Thursday, after which group play resumes in mid-September.

The loss was the 16th in18 matches by a side from Major League Soccer, who have only managed two draws against Mexican teams in Mexico.

Midway through the first half, EmilioRenteria went off to have a bleeding facial wound bandaged up, and came back on wearing a clean jersey without a number.

When Andy Iroheaded in Renteria’s cross, Panamanian referee Luis Rodriguez consulted with his linesman and cautioned Renteria while disallowing the goal.

  3. I’ve said in the past and I’ll say it again, I can’t understand why we don’t have American Ref’s refing games in Central America considering every time an MLS or the US MNT playes in central america they are relagated by terrible refing.

  5. I didn’t see the game so #1 why was Renteria cautioned and #2 why was the goal disallowed?

  6. Apparently, Renteria was cautioned either because the officials eventually decided that he had not been officially waved on to the field and/or that his jersey had no number. Mostly, confusion seems to have reigned. Blogging about the episode is available from The Columbus Dispatch: http://blog.dispatch.com/crew/
