Mexico, which fell to Brazil on PKs in the semifinals, beat host Japan, 3-1, to take the bronze medal. The victory marks Mexico’s second Olympic soccer medal, having claimed gold in 2012 with a win over Brazil in the final in London. By the time Kaoru Mitoma scored for Japan in the 78th minute, El Tri was ahead, 3-0, thanks Francisco Cordova‘s penalty kick and headers by Johan Vasquez and Alexis Vega.
