A former pharmacist, longtime Soccer America columnist Paul Gardner’s journalism career began in the medical field. He worked for the London-based Pharmacy Digest before moving to the USA in 1959 and becoming medical news magazine MD’s managing editor, a position he held through 1964 while free-lancing as a sports reporter and photographer.
