In 1984, Pia Sundhage scored Sweden’s fifth tiebreaker spot kick to down England in the final of the first women’s European Championship.

The Swedes celebrated in front of 2,567 fans at Kenilworth Road stadium in Luton, England.

Euro 2025, at which former USWNT boss Sundage coached host Switzerland, has already set the competition’s attendance record with 623,088. That’s a per-game average of 20,770 heading into Sunday’s Spain-England final at sold-out St. Jakob-Park (39,000-seat) in Basel.

The England-hosted Euro 2022, whose Wembley final drew 87,192, had a total attendance of 574,875 for an 18,544 per-game average.

Previous Euros never exceeded the 9,000 average attendance mark.

Euro 2025 has also received an unprecedented amount of media coverage in Europe.

As Spain embarked on its 2023 Women’s World Cup campaign, Spain’s six main daily sports newspapers gradually increased their women’s coverage after focusing on the offseason men’s club transfer market. Marca published seven Kylian Mbappé covers before Spain’s round-of-16 win earned the women their first Marca cover amid World Cup play.

Spain’s 1-0 win over England in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final drew 5.6 million average viewers (66% share) on Spanish TV and by then the Spanish sports media had significantly increased its coverage.

For Euro 2025, Marca and AS both dedicated their July 3 covers to Spain’s opener against Portugal and each have had at least seven more Euro 2025 covers since.

Spain’s semifinal win over Germany was the second-most watched women’s game on Spanish TV with 3.3 million viewers (32.3% share) and 4.3 million (39.7% share) were tuned in for overtime.
