On Sunday, former Paris Saint-Germain advisor Michel Moulin claimed that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney had already agreed tojoin Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva at the free-spending French giant this summer. However, on Monday, the Daily Mail reported that Rooney has no desireto leave Old Trafford and that he wants to sit down with his current employer at the end of the season to discuss an extension to his current contract, which by that time will have two years torun.
Perhaps the 27-year-old is using PSG’s interest as a bargaining tool to get better terms out of United. According to the Mail, negotiations between the parties could be“lengthy and complicated,” given that Rooney already makes more than $300,000 per week, and that his form hasn’t been as good as it was last season. Because of this, the report saysUnited might initially offer a lower base salary with more performance-related incentives. Even so, the Mail describes both sides as “keen to agree a new deal,” so unless theycannot reach a compromise, Rooney will be staying at Old Trafford.
The Rooney-PSG rumors have been lingering for about a month, with reports saying the England striker had told histeammates he could leave Old Trafford this summer. Alex Ferguson then curiously left his star player out of United’s starting 11 for the second-leg of its UEFA Champions Leagueseries against Real Madrid, though he insisted it was for tactical reasons.
